15th Annual PARTNERSHIPS in OPTOMETRY
Sunday, March 18, 2012
9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Breakfast, Lunch, Dessert, LOTS of Raffle Prizes
Partnerships in Optometry is an annual event sponsored by the SCCO Student Association whereby renowned speakers will educate students about practice modalities and the world of optometry beyond the optometry classroom.
Speakers this year come from around the country and have a variety of knowledge, and experience. The purpose of the 15th Annual program is to provide students with the opportunity to ask questions that are not asked in class, and to hear about experiences not taught in class. Our speakers will talk about what to do after you've just graduated, where to go, how to maintain- build-design- staff and run your practice, how to start a frame company, how optical is important in our profession, and much more!
The speakers include:
- Dr. Stacey Gin, graduate of Southern California College of Optometry and President of the Asian-American Optometric Society
- Dr. Carol Alexander, graduate of Ohio State University College of Optometry and wife of our very own Dr. Alexander
- Dr. Tim Jankowski, graduate of the University of California Berkeley School of Optometry
- Dr. Donna Weiss, graduate of Pennsylvania College of Optometry
- Kyle Yamaguchi, owner and frame wear designer of 141Eyewear traveling from Oregon
- Barbara Wright, owner of Barbara Wright Design company specializing in Optometric offices, traveling from Tennessee

SCCO's Eye Ball 2011
The Eye Ball is SCCO’s premiere student event for the holiday season! Held annually, this formal event is organized by the Student Association Board (SAB) for the entire student body. This year’s event owes its success to SAB officers Thuy Tran, ’14 and Janet Doan, ’14, Department of Extracurricular Activities.
This year’s Eye Ball was held at The Reef Restaurant that sits on the water of Long Beach Harbor with its twinkling skyline and view of the Queen Mary docked in the harbor. The location provided the perfect backdrop for good times with classmates: Balloon Pop, a Scavenger Hunt, and Musical Chairs—all topped-off with a prop-filled photo booth and chocolate fondue fountain set the festive mood.
Thanks SAB and especially, Thuy and Janet, for the much-needed stress relief! Same time next year? Yep!
Spirit Week: A student-organized event celebrating SCCO!
Special thanks to the Fullerton Fire Department for hosting the Toy Drive, Tom Runge for building the awesome trophy, Chris Walsh and Abby Brotherton for planning the event, and all other faculty and students that helped make this a success.
Highlights of SCCO's 1st Annual Spirit Week. The SCCO community was split into 4 teams: Red, Blue, Green, and Gray. Each primary color team consisted of a mix of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-years and the Gray team consisted of 4th-years and faculty.
The 4 teams competed honorably and enthusiastically for the coveted trophy! Events included the Hot Dog Eating Competition, Retinoscopy Relay, Hand Neutralization Race, 1st-Year Instrument Dash, and Trivia Contest. The winner was announced at SCCO's Eye Ball (video coming soon).
Aren't optometry students geeky?!? Don't answer that...!
Welcome Back BBQ: Welcoming the Incoming Class
At the beginning of the new academic year, all the students and faculty get together to socialize and have fun! The event is organized by the Student Association Board to unite the SCCO family before everyone gets too busy. This year, we had an awesome balloon artist that created some crazy hats!
SCCO Interns Win Top Video Awards
Two SCCO Interns have won First and Second Place honors for the Envision 2011 Video Contest sponsored by the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO). "Optometrist: The Hero of Vision," earned First Place honors for, Neal Guymon, SCCO Class of 2012. The video, "Optometry: The Journey," brought Second Place honors to, Paul Neville, SCCO Class of 2011. Prize money totaled $5,000 for First Place and $2,500 for Second Place.
Annually, ASCO hosts a contest for a student created video promoting Optometry as a profession. Optometry interns from all ASCO-member institutions are eligible to submit original videos to compete for three cash awards. The videos are then hosted on YouTube and used as a promotional tool to market the value of becoming a Doctor of Optometry.
